The form of SPLIT which is composed of two split basic units with strong direction comes from the shape of the primitive house. We studied the possibilities of various city-events within limited space (5mX5mX5m) right from the start. So we found that a universal and certain form within such a small space cannot meet the need of various city-events in the young city like Shenzhen. In order to find some way to hold the enormously various city-events and motivate more imaginative activities, we explored all the forms which may provide possibilities to meet our need and designed SPLIT.
By the specially designed basic units--- space with clear form and direction, we can combine them freely by any number of them. So the mission is accomplished by combining different units to meet different city-event. It also provides an opportunity for users to explore the possibilities to combine the units easily by themselves.
the interaction between SPLIT and built environment is a kind of short-term reproduction of spatial relations. It provide a procedural strategy of space update. This innovative and present design strategy is different from normal architecture design and urban planning methods.
For the public space of Shekou which is under renewal, SPLIT is more an in-progress space than a long-standing facility. It may intervene in any space of Shekou and any event which is now happening. By abundant combination and interactive usage, SPLIT could make up for the lack of certain spaces and serve as a cushion between current using and long-range planning.
